Zipcar, one of the country&#x92;s hotter and hipper online car rental programs, has landed at the University of Missouri-Kansas See and Rockhurst University.</p><p>The innovative service, which starts today at UMKC with two cars, allows drivers as adolescent as 18 to reserve cars through their computer or smartphone, pick them up on campus, split them hourly or daily without charge for gasoline or insurance, and then drop them off where they started.</p><p>&#x93;This will be the first nonetheless for this car-sharing program in Kansas City and the first university in the state to use Zipcars,&#x94; John Austin, a UMKC spokesman, said Tuesday. &#x93;It&#x92;s an sweep of our sustainability initiative and our focus on alternative transportation, because we&#x92;re an urban campus.&#x94;</p><p>And if the membership program catches on at the two resident universities, Boston-based Zipcar eventually could be locating its online rental cars on other Kansas Town locations as well, said Michael Serafino, Zipcar&#x92;s general superintendent for university programs.</p><p>&#x93;There is likelihood, but I&#x92;m hesitant to say when,&#x94; Serafino said. &#x93;We start at the university altitude, where there is some density, and try to grow out into local communities, but we need a beachhead.&#x94;</p><p>Zipcars started in 2000 serving the Harvard University and Massachusetts Originate of Technology campuses, and has since grown to include 250 colleges and universities and 16 metropolitan areas in the Partnership States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
